Welcome to our new interview series with the ELIA Board of Directors! In this series, we’ll get to know the personal and professional journeys of our board members, explore their roles within their companies, and learn more about how they contribute to their ELIA committees.
Our first feature is Anu Carnegie-Brown, ELIA President and Managing Director of Sandberg. Join us as we explore Anu’s career milestones, discover what kind of person Sandberg would be if it were a human, and learn about her role in leading ELIA’s content committee.
Can you tell us the story of your career journey using just five emojis, and explain how each one represents a key moment or aspect of your professional life?
👩🎨👩🏫📈🏗️🎇
I divide my professional journey into three sections; content creation, teaching, and leadership, but they all overlap and take place within the LSP context. As a translator and writer, I paint with words. Training colleagues and collaboration with academia has satisfied the little teacher in me. And as a CEO, I’m particularly keen on business analytics and proud of the reporting we have put in place at Sandberg.
My contribution to the language services sector has been in building a sustainable business that trains and employs a great number of language professionals and provides value to its clients in challenging circumstances. And the additional sparkle we all need in our day-to-day work comes from my engagement with the inspiring people in our industry associations.
If your company were a person, what kind of personality would it have and why?
Sandberg as a person is open, honest and dependable. No longer the tall, blond Viking they once were, they now appear strong-featured and lean. With their experience and perceptive skills, they take a broad, long-range view of things. In their work, they are efficient and logical; they are good at organising and strong in reasoning power. Because of their easy-going and approachable nature, they can help others, particularly in dealing with complexity. Clear and focused communication will ensure a productive and rewarding collaboration with Sandberg.
How does your ELIA committee enhance the member experience? What value and benefits do members gain from this?
I lead the ELIA content committee, set up in 2024 to create content for various purposes: to provide value to our existing members; to attract new members to the association and its events; to create trust for localisation buyers to work with the ELIA member companies; and to increase knowledge and awareness about the professional language services.
You see the results of our work on LinkedIn, Facebook, and X, and in ELIA’s newsletter, and we’d love you to engage with them. Our committee works directly with ELIA’s Marketing & Communications Manager.
