Curated by our Networking Days 2026 local partner, Tatutrad, for your Seville adventure
So, you are coming to Seville for ELIA Networking Days 2026. Let us give you a small heads-up about the city that will be hosting you this October, because Seville is not just a beautiful backdrop for a conference. It is a place with a story, a personality, and a language that will surprise you in the best possible way.
A Brief History
Once upon a time—specifically, the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries—Seville was the capital of the world. The Casa de Contratación, established in 1503, made Seville the only legal gateway to the Americas. All the gold, silver, spices, and ideas flowing between the Old World and the New had to pass through this city. Merchants, explorers, artists, and adventurers crowded its streets: it was the centre of everything!
Then, the Guadalquivir river silted up, trade routes shifted, and in 1717 Cádiz took over as the official port of the Indies. The centre of the world moved on.
The language services industry is living through its own version of this story right now. AI, shifting client expectations, and changing demand are forcing every LSP to ask the same uncomfortable question Seville once had to answer: what do we do when the world we built our success on starts to change?
Seville’s answer was actually rather good. The city that lost its commercial crown became the city of flamenco, of the world’s most celebrated Holy Week, of a culture so rich and alive that people travel from every corner of the globe to experience it.
The Language: Soft, Fast, and Gloriously Loud
The Spanish you will hear in Seville is not quite like the Spanish you may have studied. It is warmer, faster, and louder, and we say that with great affection and zero apology.
Here are a few things to know before you arrive.
Sevillians often aspirate or simply drop the final ‘s’ of words, so más o menos (more or less) can sound closer to má o meno. The speech flows like the Guadalquivir: continuously, without too many hard stops. There is also seseo, the soft pronunciation of ‘c’ and ‘z’ as ‘s’, which gives Sevillian Spanish its distinctive, musical quality. This feature is the reason virtually all of Latin America speaks Spanish the same way: it was the Sevillian accent that crossed the Atlantic with the colonisers and took root across an entire continent.
And then there is the volume. If you are sitting in a café and the table next to you sounds like a very passionate board meeting, do not worry. They are almost certainly just discussing lunch plans. Sevillanos are not angry; we are enthusiastic. Communication here is a full-body sport with hands, eyebrows, and voice all working together at full intensity. Once you understand that, it becomes one of the most joyful things about the city.
A Few Useful Words
You do not need to speak fluent Spanish to enjoy Seville, but a few local expressions will earn you warmth from the moment you use them.
- No ni ná: Our favourite linguistic paradox. Three negatives—no, ni, nada—stacked together to mean the complete opposite: “Absolutely!” or “Of course!” It makes no grammatical sense and perfect emotional sense. Use it enthusiastically and watch people smile.
- Quillo/Quilla: A shortening of chiquillo/a (little one), used to address a friend or get someone’s attention. Think “mate,” “hey you,” or simply “listen.” It is warm and casual.
- Mi arma: It sounds like “my weapon,” but it is actually a phonetic evolution of mi alma, “my soul”. If someone says this to you, you have made a friend for life.
- Estar apañao: Context is everything here. It can mean being sorted and ready, but more often it is used ironically to say someone is in a bit of a mess. If you are still running your business exactly as you did five years ago, well… estás apañao.
Seville is a city that has navigated enormous change and come out the other side with its spirit amplified. That feels like exactly the right energy for a gathering of language industry leaders who are ready to challenge their assumptions, connect with peers, and think differently about what comes next.
Come with an open mind, comfortable shoes, and a willingness to be a little loud. Seville will do the rest.
