Discovering Chania: A Practical Guide for Execs 2026

As we prepare to welcome the ELIA executive community to Chania, Greece, this May, we invite you to explore more than just the programme. The setting itself plays a subtle but important role in the Focus on Executives experience.

Greek is one of the world’s oldest continuously recorded languages, with over 3,000 years of history. In Crete, it takes on a distinctive form known as Cretan Greek. Explore more about Cretan Greek in our previous article.

Chania, located on the north-west coast of Crete, offers a distinctive balance: rich history, natural beauty, and a pace that encourages both reflection and connection. Expect conversations that continue beyond the session rooms, whether over a shared meal, a walk by the sea, or a relaxed hotel terrace.

With the event taking place on 14-15 May at the Minoa Palace Resort Hotel in Platanias, just outside Chania, you will also find yourself perfectly positioned between the calm of the coast and the energy of the city.

Here are a few recommendations to make the most of your time in and around Chania:

The Old Venetian Harbour

At the heart of Chania you’ll find its iconic harbour, shaped by centuries of Venetian influence. With its lighthouse, waterfront buildings, and narrow alleys, the area offers a perfect meeting spot for relaxed conversations.

Chania Old Town

Just behind the harbour, the Old Town reveals layers of history through its architecture, where you’ll find Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences together within a compact, walkable area. Take your time to explore the small shops, cafés, and squares.

Platanias

As the location of the event, Platanias offers a coastal setting with a more relaxed pace. With its long sandy beach, sea views, and selection of restaurants and cafés, it provides an easy transition between focused sessions during the day and informal discussions in the evening—all whilst staying close to the venue.

Balos Lagoon

If you choose to extend your stay, Crete’s natural landscape offers great opportunities to relax and explore local areas. Balos Lagoon is known for its turquoise waters and wide open views, located approximately 56km northwest of Chania, or 1h15-20min drive. The sea is very shallow and warm, and in many places the sand has a lovely pinkish color, because of millions of crushed shells. Balos is reachable in 3 ways: driving, a ferry from Kissamos, or a 3-hour hike from Kaliviani.

Samaria Gorge

For those seeking a more active experience, the Samaria Gorge offers one of Europe’s most notable hiking routes. It is the longest gorge in Europe (total length 16km), and one of the most impressive gorges in Greece, located in White Mountains’ National Park. This excursion requires a full day and planning beforehand.

Loutraki Beach

About 30 mins drive from Chania centre, you’ll find a sheltered cove on the northeast edge of Souda Bay. Enjoy a swim in its calm and crystal clear waters. It is one of the most popular places for swimming in Chania. Is it reachable by car or public bus.

Seitan Limania Beach

Nestled on the picturesque Akrotiri Peninsula is the secluded beach of Seitan Limania Beach surrounded by towering cliffs. You can reach the area in 30-35 minutes from Chania centre by driving or taxi, as well as by public bus. In order to go down to the beach, you must take a short but steep and rocky path. We advise wearing adequate shoes!

Heraklion and Knossos Palace

For those flying in or out of Heraklion Airport, or extending their stay in Crete, a trip to the Palace of Knossos offers a fantastic excursion for those interested in history and archeology. Knossos Palace is one of Greece’s largest archaeological sites, with a rich history dating back to the 7th millennium BC. It is located about 20 minutes south from Heraklion, and just over 2 hours from Chania and is accessible by car or local buses. We also recommend visiting the Heraklion Archaeological Museum!

Local Cuisine and Taverns

Cretan cuisine is known for its simplicity and quality, based around local ingredients and traditions. From fresh seafood to seasonal vegetables and olive oil, meals here are designed to be shared. A dinner in a local taverna can easily become an extension of the day’s conversations!
