Discover Berlin’s Hidden Gems at ELIA Networking Days

Curated by our local ND24 partner, Gemino, for your Berlin adventure.

This October, during the ELIA Networking Days in Berlin, don’t miss the chance to explore some of the city’s lesser-known treasures. Whether you want to discover Berlin’s dark sides or enjoy a cold beer and traditional cuisine, these are our tips to enrich your Berlin experience.

Märchenbrunnen in Volkspark FriedrichshainJust a stone’s throw from the Leonardo Royal Hotel Berlin Alexanderplatz, Märchenbrunnen (Fairy Tale Fountain) in Volkspark Friedrichshain is a whimsical escape from the bustling city. This enchanting fountain, the largest public one from the imperial era, is adorned with sculptures from Grimms’ fairytale characters. Relax and let your imagination wander, with the picturesque backdrop of the first red and yellow autumn leaves. Go a few steps further into the park to find the idyllic Schoenbrunn Restaurant/Biergarten with German & Austrian specialties, or climb the Große Bunkerberg (Large Bunker Hill) – the remains of an anti-aircraft tower covered in rubble after WWII (see also Humboldthain Flak Tower below).

Max und Moritz

For an authentic taste of traditional Berlin cuisine, head to Max und Moritz in Kreuzberg. This charming restaurant has been serving classic German dishes since 1902. Enjoy hearty specialties like Eisbein (pickled knuckle of pork) or Berliner Bouletten (meatballs) in a cozy, old-world setting. Don’t forget to stop at an ATM machine on the way there: as one of Berlin’s most die-hard traditions dictates, you can only pay in cash here.

By the way, the name refers to a German classic by Wilhelm Busch: Max and Moritz: A Story of Seven Boyish Pranks. Name drop this to impress any Germans with your cultural background 😉

Kulturbrauerei: A Cultural Haven

As you head towards the Frannz Club for the networking dinner, take a moment to explore the vibrant Kulturbrauerei. This historic brewery complex, now a thriving cultural hub, boasts a diverse array of attractions. Wander through its courtyards to discover art exhibitions, indie cinemas, and quaint cafes. At the other end of the complex (seen from Frannz Club) is a permanent exhibition about everyday life in the GDR – and it’s free of charge 😊

Bötzow Brewery

A short walk from Volkspark Friedrichshain, this former brewery has been transformed into a creative space with art installations, a distillery, and trendy cafes. And there’s beer, of course.

Teufelsberg

Venture a bit further to discover this abandoned US listening station from the Cold War in the Grunewald Forest. Explore its striking street art and a panoramic view of Berlin from its 120.1 meters above the sea level.

Clärchens Ballhaus

Step back in time at this historic dance hall in Mitte. Since 1913, Clärchens Ballhaus has been a beloved spot for dancing, dining, and enjoying live music in a nostalgic, old-world atmosphere. Check opening hours before you go, they have been changing recently. But they should be open on weekends.

Urban Nation Street Art Museum

For a taste of Berlin’s edgy artistic spirit, visit the Urban Nation Street Art Museum. Located in the Schöneberg district, this unique museum showcases dynamic street art from local and international artists. The vibrant murals and installations both inside and outside the museum celebrate the city’s creative energy and offer an ever-changing gallery of urban expression. As street art is made to be enjoyed by everybody, the entrance is free or donation-based.

Prater GartenLocated in Prenzlauer Berg on the trendy Kastanienallee, not far from Kulturbrauerei / Frannz Club, this historic beer garden, Prater Garten, is Berlin’s oldest, dating back to 1837. Enjoy a cold brew under the chestnut trees and soak in the local vibe. Do not underestimate Berliner’s tolerance to cold temperatures. But if the beer garden is closed, there is an indoor restaurant serving classic German dishes.

Berlin Medizinhistorisches Museum

Delve into the fascinating world of medical history at the Berlin Medizinhistorisches Museum (Museum of medical history). Housed in the Charité University Hospital, this museum offers a compelling look at the evolution of medical science over the centuries. Exhibits range from historical medical instruments to anatomical specimens, providing a unique and sometimes eerie glimpse into the past practices of medicine. Do not go with a full stomach!

Beer at the Späti

One of Berlin’s quintessential experiences is grabbing a beer at a Späti (short for Spätkauf, meaning “late-night shop”). There are more than 1000 of these convenience stores in the city, open around the clock and offering a wide selection of local beers and all sorts of drinks. Pick up a cold bottle and enjoy it as you stroll through the city’s vibrant streets. Apart from it being a casual and authentic way to soak in the local culture, these shops might also come in handy, as they offer all sorts of necessary products: snacks, sweets, tobacco products, souvenirs, toilet paper, hygiene products, and much more.

Humboldthain Flak Tower

Explore a piece of WWII history at the Humboldthain Flak Tower in Volkspark Humboldthain. This massive concrete fortress, once used for anti-aircraft defense, now offers guided tours that take you through its dark, cavernous interiors. Or climb to the top for stunning panoramic views of Berlin.

We hope you will enjoy memorable experiences with colleagues and friends while visiting these hidden gems. And who knows? You might discover even more quirky street art and serene gardens during the Gemino Treasure Hunt. Berlin is ready to surprise and inspire you at every turn.
